Racing Lawn Mowers Safely

Racing Lawn Mowers Safely

No matter what kind of racing you are participating in, no matter what kind of vehicle you are driving or riding – safety must be your primary concern. If you get injured, be it lightly or seriously, you won’t only be out of the race, but you might lose time on the job, and put your family through terrible stress.

Just like any other motorsport, lawn mower racing has grown in its use and enforcement of safety regulations. For example, an ignition kill switch tether is now required. This is one of the most sensible, injury-preventing measures imaginable – if the racer falls off, or if there is a crash, the vehicle will shut off automatically.

Also, all riders must wear a helmet. Depending on your division, there may even be specific helmet style or rating requirements. You will definitely want to wear a full-face helmet, even if it is not required. Since lawn mower racing events take place on dirt tracks, there is a major risk of being hit with airborne debris. Imagine a rock flying into your face at 30mph. Be sure to read the labels and get the highest safety rating you can. This is not an area you want to attempt to save money in - though, of course, if you don’t value your face, go ahead and buy a cheap helmet. If you are buying used, be sure that there are no cracks or other damage – if the safety foam is compacted, it provides virtually no additional protection.

Wearing proper attire is also important. You can mow your lawn in shorts and a T-shirt; don’t even think about it for lawn mower racing. While specialized clothing is not really necessary, you are going to want long pants and sleeves, in a durable material like denim or leather. This will protect you against small debris, dirt rash, and the heat of your machine.

In addition, protective gear such as gloves and joint caps are always improving, becoming lighter and tougher year after year. Try to find leather-palmed gloves, and don’t buy them too big or small. You will also want to seriously consider buying motocross racing boots (try your local motorcycle shop), as they will protect your feet and lower legs. Another option is to wear regular leather work boots – they’ll do an adequate job providing support and some protection against injury.

Remember, you’re out there racing lawn mowers for fun – not to end up in the hospital or scarred for life. Take the time to protect yourself adequately – and then get out there and race!
